Fever blisters, cold sores, nongenital herpes, whatever you wanna call it; either way, it's a pain, literally. So, if you have this virus in your system, and you periodically get these lesions, what do you do? What helps the pain? What shortens the duration?
Has anyone heard of taking Lycene tablets a few times a day when the feel a sore coming on? I haven't tried this yet, so if anyone has, or knows of some other remedy that works, let me know.
No, I haven't heard of those tablets. But I think Carmex, Blistex, and other companies like that have cold sore formulas that you can buy, and those are supposed to lessen the pain and help the sore heal faster.
I get them unfortunately. I only usually get them now very occasionally when I'm run down, but after my last battle with the flu a few months ago, I got not one, not even two, but three of them, one after the other; the last one being up my nose which was my worst nightmare. I use to hear of others getting them there and was always thankful I hadn't had them there myself; first time for everything i guess.
The creams out that I've tried don't seem to get rid of them much quicker or anything. my nan uses metho; it stings but she swares by it. She tried it on me when I was little, but, no way!
yes I get those too, mainly when I have just gotten over sickness or when I get really stressed out. I use the lycene tablets and also the lycene cream that you put directly on the sores. My mom also used to tell me to take a needle and pop them, and she used to do her sores that way as well as mine, but I never liked that idea much, but it does make them dry out faster though. Also, another thing my mom used to tell me was to take a cotton ball with milk and dab it on the sores, but it didn't seem to work very well. I also tried Abreva but that didn't work much either, and it is expensive.
Anyway, that is what my experiences have been with cold sores. I have been getting those since I was a little kid, especially when under stress.
Wouldn't popping them cause an infection? i dont' like the idea of doing that either.
the best thing I have found, is salt water. a warm saltwater bath is the best thing I have found. it can sting but trust me it does work. someone also told me mouth wash would work, but it burns wayyyyyyyy to much.
oh yeah, popping them with a needle? uhm, not such a good idea. sounds painful.
I get them too. But usually it's rarely that I do get them. i just don't use anything on them.
oh yeah something else I just thought of. if you could find something like ambosaw (SP?) something you put on your gums to numb them if you have a tooth ache, that helps with the pain.
There is this new OriGel that's specifically for cold sores. It doesn't make them go away faster, but it dries them out and numbs the pain. Very nice stuff, and not too expensive. I bet you can find it in your local drugstore or maybe even the grocery store or Walmart.
Hmmm, i'll have to try that. thanks for the suggestion.
There is also a product called lipacton (I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled though) and you apply it directly on the cold sore. When I used to have cold sores, it worked really well for me. Now, the sores seem to have migrated inwards (canker sores) which is a complete and utter pain in the ass (well, in the mouth I guess). And, assuming I'm not the only one on the boards who gets these, I'd recommend a product called zilacdon (again, that's how it's pronounced, not sure if that's how it's spelled). When you first apply it to a canker, it hurts like hell and you may find yourself fleetingly psychotic, but rest assured the stinging is very short-lived and immediate numbness/relief will follow.
hmmm, I'll have to try it, thanks.
there is also something called aberieva and that works wonderful a little expensive but well worth it. you can purchase it at any drugstore
Abreva never worked for me. And the amountthey charge for something that doesn't really work is truly astonishing.
it never worked for me either, and the tube was small so charging what they charge for a small tube is a bit over kill, in my opinion.
